The Best Jewels Worn On & Off the Court

Tennis is one of the few sports that gives the player freedom to add flair to their match attire. Jewels, watches, and the famous diamond tennis bracelets have been icons of classic elegance throughout the years. From the viewers to the players, jewelry is a special addition to this event. As Wimbledon 2022 starts in a couple of days, we’re reminiscing on the best jewels worn both on and off the court.

While you may be unfamiliar with this name, you’ve certainly heard of the term “tennis bracelet.” The bracelet we all know as the “tennis bracelet”, hasn’t always gone by this name. The popular line diamond bracelet has been around since the early 1920s. However, its name only became famous when Chris Evert brought it to the court. From the start of her career, she was known for her chic outfits and diamonds. In 1987, Chris Evert was playing an outstandingly long match when her diamond bracelet flew off her wrist. At that moment the name “tennis bracelet” stuck.

Serena Williams is a household name, whether you know much about tennis or not. If you’re even more familiar with her and her style, then you know she’s no stranger to jewelry trends (and even has her own jewelry line with Zales). During Wimbledon 2019, Williams rocked the famous “broosh”: A Nike swoosh brooch in Swarovski crystals that everyone was head over heels for, including us! With the addition of her other pieces, she famously wore even more jewelry than a special viewer in the Royal Box, Kate Middleton, during this match.

Another household name, Roger Federer, is no stranger to W&H as he is a sponsored athlete of Rolex. In 2009, Federer defeated Andy Roddick at Wimbledon while wearing his most famous timepiece, his Rolex Datejust II. He’s voiced the importance of this piece and how it signifies a momentous time in his life. Unfortunately, Federer won’t be playing this year due to injury, but maybe we’ll see him wearing a famous timepiece off the court?

#1 Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been a long-time competitor of Rolex ambassador, Roger Federer. No matter how competitive the players may be when swinging a racket, they share their love for wearing their Rolex on the court. Tsonga's watch of choice is the Rolex Milgauss, complete with a colored crystal over the dial.

Sitting in the Royal Box at Wimbledon is an incredibly high honor. Unless you’re part of the royal family, then it’s a given. A frequent attendee of Wimbledon, the Duchess of Windsor has worn her premier looks; not only stunning wardrobe pieces but jewelry, as well. Yet, not all are big purchases. Her necklace featured above is her Trio Midnight Moon pendant necklace by British designer, Daniella Draper and is composed of 9 karat recycled gold and diamonds. It is inscribed with the initials of her three children George, Charlotte, and Louis. Last but not least, She completes all of her looks with the all-time famous sapphire engagement ring, originally worn by her mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Accompanying Kate Middleton during the 2019 Wimbledon event, the Duchess of Sussex went with a minimal, yet chic jewelry look. Markle wore Jennifer Meyer turquoise inlay bar studs and a Goddess Durga Round Ring by Pippa Small as well as her engagement ring that was recently redesigned by Lorraine Schwartz with a delicate diamond band. In true trendsetting fashion, the turquoise inlay earrings sold out almost immediately after the Duchess was shown wearing them.

David Beckham is just as much a style icon as he is famous for his time on the soccer field. That being said, the Tudor ambassador sported his Black Bay Chrono S&G while enjoying Wimbledon 2019 from the sidelines. At the time, this model had just been released and Beckham has continued to wear the Black Bay Chrono S&G to various formal events since. We think it’s a match made in heaven!

While Emma Watson’s 3-piece suit caught most people’s eyes, what was on her ears caught ours. Watson paired shoulder-length dangle earrings, that look to be made from recycled materials. While we’re not sure about where they came from, they sure do bring just the right amount of shine. The actress certainly knows how to make a statement, whether she's on the red carpet or enjoying Wimbledon from the sidelines.
