Gold

Workable because of its malleability, beautiful because of its brilliance and color, gold jewelry offers a treasury of style in a range of karatage and price.

Karatage measures the fineness of gold, with 100% pure gold called 24 karat. Then, 18 karat is 18/24 or 75% pure gold. Other common karatage is 14 and 10 karat gold. The balance of the metal mixture is an alloy such as copper, zinc, nickel, palladium and others – all of which can change the natural yellow color into pink, green or white.

Often confused with solid gold are manufacturing methods such as gold-filled, gold overlay, rolled gold plate and gold vermeil. All of these comprise a layer of metal with minute gold content bonded to the outer surface.
